The news is devastating. The horrific and senseless murder of these people is a real reckoning for America. They were good people and they were loved; they had husbands and children, now left to try and understand what is incomprehensible, they had hobbies, owned businesses, worked hard. Many came to America, believing that this was a place that would be welcoming, a land of possibilities and a melting pot of cultures where they could find a home.

As a woman, and an immigrant in this country, I can only barely imagine the day-to-day experiences of the AAPI communities. I have been shocked and appalled by news of violence and racist attacks towards innocent people, and am afraid for all of the stories that don’t get picked up or reported on. I also know that this is not just a problem in the United States, but all over the world, and we are long, long overdue for change.

I stand in solidarity and as an ally with the AAPI communities.

I would like to direct you to the fantastic resources shared by artist, Kim Saira. There are so many things to learn and unlearn and different ways to support our friends. I think it’s important not to be overwhelmed into inaction, but driven to facilitate change in any way possible.

Last night I watched some wonderful, heartbreakingly beautiful movie shorts that were a part of the HBO ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN VISIONARIES. I strongly encourage you to browse and give them your time. I watched six films: Halva, Moonwalk With Me, Zoetic, Fine China, Si, and Lonely Blue Night. This was some of the finest film-making I have seen in a long time and I know that each story will stay with me.

We all know that, because of the evil racism shown by the previous leadership, the Coronavirus has been largely weaponised against the AAPI communities. I’m working my way through this thoughtful YouTube Series, Asian American Stories in the Time of Coronavirus. Real, personal stories help with understanding what is really going on.

I want all people of AAPI heritage to feel supported, welcome and safe here. I want to listen and help in any way I can. The fight against racism and white supremacy is not yours to face alone, it is a fight for every one of us.
